‘The Only Sensible Attitude to the Booker is to Treat it as Posh Bingo.’

So this year’s Booker Prize has, unsurprisingly, gone to Julian Barnes, the man who infamously uttered the above in response to his three previous loses, for The Sense of an Ending. Admittedly, his was the only book from the shortlist that I have read thus far, but The Sense of an Ending is exquisite and a deserved winner. Far from being the populist ‘readable’ fiction that some have accused this year’s short list of being comprised of, Barnes’s novella is a great work of literature. Congratulations Mr Barnes!
