Should you ever find yourself in Manchester’s   Northern Quarter be sure to pay a visit to the   superb, not-for-profit Nexus Art Cafe. Not  only do they do a perfect roasted vegetable  and brie sandwich but their in-house lending  library meant I was able to borrow F. Scott  Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which it really  is about time I read. I also took the  opportunity to relieve myself of Sebastian Faulks’s Birdsong, which I’d been lugging  about in my bag despite the fact that the two  of us were not getting along. I hope it has found a home with a  worthier reader than me.
